Take Back Your Power By Simply Changing Your Thoughts

Health Is PowHer Podcast Episode 59

With Dr. Anna Esparham, MD

Many intuitives like Carolyne Myss, Louise Hay,Esther Hicks and scientific researchers such as Bruce Lipton and even the well known “placebo effect” has established that we can either lose or create our own health and wellbeing through our inner belief systems about ourselves - which ultimately lends to what we’re thinking on a daily basis.

Now, it may be impossible to monitor our thoughts 24/7 and to be aware of them every second of every day, but we can be easily aware of patterns that exist in our life.

Take for example, a woman who has trouble making lasting friendships or finding a partner for life with someone she loves. But deep down, she feels undeserving, may not love herself, enjoy her company enough alone that she mirrors this in real life - as like calls to like - the law of quantum physics is that our vibrational energy can pull a quantum particle into life.

It is the inner work that creates our outer experience - and this is true in all walks of life, whether it be work, love, relationships, family, finances, and happiness. Once we stop siphoning off power through berating ourselves, criticizing ourselves and not believing we’re worthy - even though the universe is infinite - we will continue creating limitations in our life.

We may think we’re stuck in a job or stuck with a boss that’s manipulative and undeserving of her title. But deep down, we have the belief now that after being in so many jobs with negative bosses, we’ve created the belief that all bosses are terrible. And therefore, they are. I have done this so many times to myself!  After experiencing small “t” traumas in several job situations, I may have created future experiences like this and maybe deep down I actually didn’t want to work for anyone anymore. So maybe I created the experience to get out and be on my own.

The power of prayer has been shown in multiple studies to have a healing effect and enhance wellbeing in multiple studies. This power of belief enhances or changes vibrational frequencies of our cell receptors that have a cascade effect on other cells/tissues/organs and bodily systems.

Hypnosis and creative visualization heighten and even change our thoughts and belief system toward one of healing, surrender, letting go, and creating what our higher self truly wants.  Multiple studies have found benefit of using this power of our mind just by changing the way we perceive our situation can change the outcomes of one’s desire. High performing athletes use this to win their events, children use this to overcome extreme fear of needles and night time bed wetting, people use visualization to help pain and headaches.

The placebo effect is when for example, a drug or therapy is studied compared to a sham or control or placebo pill or therapy (meaning not the actual therapy but something similar that shouldn’t have any positive health effects on the body).

It is a very well documented phenomenon especially in my line of research and patient care - pain. It is very well known that most of the medications we offer for pain or headaches are not much better than the placebo pill. And the placebo pill which shouldn’t have any mechanism of action on the physical body - has an expectation or belief change in us that makes us believe this pill is going to heal our pain. And it does.

Several studies have shown how participants respond to histamine after they were given positive suggestions, and positive suggestions exclusively lowered itch response and even moreso when combined with a placebo cream that they told the participants would reduce the itch!

Just by believing that a sugar (placebo) pill is going to work, makes it work! Now that is some power we have.

It is a difficult concept to take in knowing that we actually have that much power.  Only because if that’s the case, then we’re responsible for the diagnosis we have, the disease, the malfunction in our body. But these dysfunctions are just a message for us - to consider what’s going on in our belief system that might be contributing to this dysfunction.

What situation are we putting ourselves in that might be toxic? Are we around people at work or family or life that take energy from us and we continue to allow it instead of taking the leap and moving away or cutting off the energetic cords that drain us?

It is interesting to consider waking up in the morning with gratitude for the life that we have, the wonders that we will experience each day, to have a smooth, joyful, and peaceful day full of energy and helping others.  Framing each day with gratitude taps into the infinite power of the universe mirroring your positivity and bringing you more of that energy.

Affirmations, intentions, prayers along with the gratitude practice (which actually has shown in research studies to increase happiness and life satisfaction while reducing depression and anxiety symptoms), add to the positive expectations and outcomes in your life.

But it takes focus and energy and habit. And I for one have to constantly keep working on it and find myself always figuring out something that I’m limiting myself with or criticizing myself for underneath or thinking that I’m not deserving or that’s the way life should be - suffering. But it really isn’t, these are negative beliefs that truly limit our power and keep us plugged in to the situation or struggle.

Even though we’re highly intuitive beings, and know something’s off, we are so worried about making the change that we don’t and continue to struggle. We’re worried about what comes next and you don’t have a plan after quitting your job, and what’s going to happen to your finances, or what will my tribe think, what will my colleagues think? What will my parents think? And even though, we are being guided with this incredibly powerful intuition that our higher self, God, the universe, angels --whatever you believe is truth.

It takes resilience to come back out of the dips that you may experience when starting on this road because often times - when we start sometimes the negativity likes to cause a little chaos in the beginning. But love and positivity persist and can change your wellbeing, your health, your energy, your relationships, your abundance, career , etc.. for the better. You are worthy of your path and your life the way you truly envision it. Happiness, joy, and peace.

We can start by affirming the positive and our desires in life, whether it be through thinking them more and more - a habit to practice for sure - and it’s not about putting a mask or smoke screen over reality - we all know what’s wrong with people with borderline personality disorder or narcisism, people who abuse others emotionally, people who just want to be your friend b/c they can use you. And we can’t expect to change them, but we can expect to change our experience with them - by either not having negative situations with them or by having them gone from our life all together so we don’t have to interact with them.

But by knowing and believing that “my life is harmonious and brings infinite happiness and abundance.  People in my life fill my heart with joy and love. I earn an amazing income and money flows to me easily. I love myself and treat myself well. Life is full of wonderful new experiences that bring out my creativity and talents to the fullest.  I have renewed energy each day and am happy to wake up each morning to experience the beauty of life.”

You can also set intentions to release negativity. I have to do this on most days of the week depending on the situations I’m in or the people I’m around.  One of my spiritual mentors taught me this affirmation: “I release what no longer serves me.” You can insert “anger” “anxiety” “unworthiness” “self-deprecating thoughts” “fatigue” “insomnia” “pain”. You can keep going to find what’s underneath some of these thoughts or symptoms. Take for example, “anger” is often a symptom that masks depression or grief or finding ourselves in situations in life that we don’t agree with. Or being a victim of something that happened and therefore, take away our power.

Writing down the affirmations, belief statements, prayers or mindful thoughts is a surefire way to begin and one of the easiest to make a habit out of.  Setting aside 5-10 minutes maybe with your fitness tracker that has “mindful moments” or “HRV body status” on there to check in with yourself as well as set your affirmations, release what doesn’t serve you, and envision your desires are all helpful to get you started. And then you can begin to notice the positive changes in your life.  And you can even set the expectation during your affirmations and creative visualization or hypnosis that you believe these changes come quickly, effortlessly, fast! And they will.
