It’s interesting that many people still think acupuncture is woo-woo or an alternative therapy - even several of our nursing staff thought it didn’t work until they tried it for themselves - and this is at an academic medical center where we utilize evidence-based therapies! And acupuncture is one of them!!  

So I thought it might be a good opportunity on this podcast episode to talk about why it’s so important to try acupuncture as part of your well-being regimen, the high quality evidence that exists to recommend acupuncture, and what it does to your body and nervous system!

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Try Acupuncture to Maintain Your Wellbeing

  1. Calms nervous system - we rev up our nervous system and limbic system A LOT during life - which is responsible for stress, fear, emotions, and memories of all the difficult situations we come to know in life. Acupuncture helps settle and balance out our overused nervous system to ground us and release what is not our natural state. 

  2. Releases neurotransmitters, hormones, substances in our nervous system pathway that induce a rest, digest, and relax state as well as activate the pathways that stop pain!  When we are in emotional pain or physical pain, there are nervous system pathways that become overactive and acupuncture helps inhibit those pathways. It’s all about balance and homeostasis!

  3. Restructures skin, fascia, connective tissue, muscle - acupuncture has been found to restructure and heal tissue that’s damaged as well as locally decrease pain by stretching out the connective tissue. When the connective tissue is stretched - it releases all kinds of substances that stop pain and restructure the tissue where the acupuncture needle is. 

  4. Decreases insulin resistance at certain electroacupuncture frequencies

  5. Battles insomnia through decreasing anxious and stimulating states

  6. Balances hormones to the natural human state when stress tends to throw it off balance

  7. Connects the mind-body for harmonial awareness

  8. Even beneficial for skin health - scars, wounds, trauma, and even cosmetic
